General Information

This test is done when medications for reflux do not work to your satisfaction. A special Bravo capsule is placed in the esophagus by the upper GI endoscopy. You will be given a data recorder to take home with you. You can perform routine activity after the procedure. Bring back the data recorder at 48 hours to determine if Acid reflux is the cause of your symptoms. Once the 24 hours are complete, the patient returns to the physician's office and the catheter is removed. All the data gathered by the recorder is downloaded into a computer for analysis and graphic display. Esophageal pH monitoring is useful in the diagnosis of acid reflux and associated conditions, such as esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus). If the symptoms of acid reflux correlate to the episodes registered in the recorder, the diagnosis is usually confirmed. Esophageal pH monitoring can also be used to determine why treatment for acid reflux is not working. If a patient is receiving medication for acid reflux and continues to have symptoms, pH monitoring can help to rule out reflux as the cause of the symptoms. Or, it may simply indicate the need to increase the dosage of the current medication or change to a different one.
